Seasoned, Solid, & Secure Prosecutor

As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for approximately 80,000 citizens of Howard County, I have built my career on aggressively prosecuting major felonies, including homicide, violent crimes, and high-level drug offenses. My unwavering commitment to upholding the law and delivering justice has earned the trust of law enforcement, victims, and the community alike.

Over a career spanning more than thirty years, I have served as Deputy Prosecutor, Chief Deputy, and elected Prosecuting Attorney. I have personally handled some of the county’s most serious and complex criminal cases, securing convictions that have protected the safety and welfare of our community.

My leadership is grounded in a deep understanding of criminal law, courtroom strategy, and trial advocacy. I bring immense common sense, sharp judgment, and a relentless focus on results to every case and decision.

I have successfully run three campaigns for four-year terms, each time earning the public’s confidence through a proven record of tough, fair, and effective prosecution.

My expertise in reading people, managing crises, and building strong public policy initiatives makes me uniquely qualified to continue leading our county’s fight against crime.

I am passionate about public service and committed to ensuring justice for all Howard County citizens.

Meet Prosecutor McCann

Mark A. McCann has spent more than 30 years relentlessly fighting for the safety and security of Howard County. Born and raised in Kokomo, Indiana, McCann has built a career as one of the state’s most seasoned and tested prosecutors, aggressively pursuing justice for victims of murder, violent crime, drug trafficking, and other major felony offenses.

After earning his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in 1986 and his Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1990, McCann was admitted to the Indiana Bar, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, 1990, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and United States Supreme Court.

Immediately after law school, he entered public service as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Howard County (1990–1994), later becoming Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (1995–2010), and ultimately elected Prosecuting Attorney in 2010.

Today, McCann leads a team of 32 professionals—including attorneys, investigators, and staff—who share his unwavering commitment to holding criminals accountable and protecting Howard County families. Over the years, he has successfully prosecuted some of the county’s most complex and high-profile criminal cases.

McCann’s service goes beyond the courtroom. He has played a critical role in supporting Howard County’s problem-solving courts, including Drug Court, Veteran Court, and Mental Health Court, helping ensure accountability, encourage rehabilitation where appropriate, and strengthen public safety initiatives. He remains an active voice in promoting smart justice reforms while staying tough on violent crime.

McCann’s leadership is recognized at both the local and national levels. He has served as Vice-President (1995–1996) and President (1996) of the Howard County Bar Association, is a long-standing member of the Indiana State Bar Association’s Federal Judiciary Committee (since 1993), and maintains active membership in the National District Attorneys Association.

Beyond his professional duties, McCann has had a significant impact on the community. He is a co-founder and Board Director of Community First Bank of Indiana, a past president and board member of the Kokomo Country Club, and a board member of the Kokomo Humane Society.
